Sunday Scribbling: Secret Identities

Well, I've always wanted to figure out my secret identity, but instead I've latched on to fictional identities that distract me from finding my own.

The first person I can remember really wanting to be other than me--does this qualify as the beginning of the knowledge of "I"? hm. . .anyway, the first person I longed to be was little orphan Annie. God, how I wanted to be a spunky little street urchin with an amazing voice who sat in the window clutching her knees and singing "Maybe in a house, all hidden by a hill. . ." To dream of what my parents might be like, to not give up hope that they'd find me, but then to get adopted by the grumpy and filthy rich daddy Warbucks and fly toy planes around his office with Punjab. I'd teach him life lessons and swim in his indoor swimming pool.

In junior high and high school I wanted to be Molly Ringwald in 16 Candles, waiting for my Jake Ryan.

In college I wanted to be Tina Schlieske from Tina and the B-Sides--a local Twin Cities band. In fact, I still want to be Tina. Her own songs are amazing, but she does this version of "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" where she seduces you with her husky gen-teel vocals, then starts jumping all over the stage and off the speakers when it gets to the "I want you baaa-by!" part. When the band broke up, she became Lola and the Redhots. I hope she's still doing her thang--in whatever identity she has now.

And I hope I figure out my secret identity soon! I'd guess it's somewhere between spunky Annie and shit-kickin' Tina.

One thing is for sure, your secret identity can sing. My alter-ego is more like Mumble of Happy Feet when it comes to vocal skills (i'm singing with my feet tho, you betcha!).

too true! That's funny I didn't put it together. My alter ego HAS to have a phenomenal voice because I truly don't. (but obviously wish I did!)

As kids we always want to be someone else. Like I wanted to be a singer in the Deep Purple band.

I liked this post. Took me back on time.

I think your secret identity is hidden in the characters you listed. We like movies because we can relate to them. It's fun to escape our world, isn't it?

Very cool!
I think at one time in or another, everyone wanted to be Molly Ringwald!

Oh this post made me laugh out loud as soon as I saw the first picture. My sister, who is 31, still longs to be orphan Annie.
